Ciao! I’m Laura, a Rome-based freelance journalist with a decade of experience writing about travel, art and culture, architecture and design, lifestyle, and food and wine. I’ve been to 50 countries on six continents, but Italy was always the one that kept me coming back. I’ve lived here since 2019 and have traveled all over the country, from the Dolomites in the north to Sicily in the south.

Here are my Top 5 places to eat and drink in Rome:

Da Enzo al 29 in Trastevere is the quintessential Roman trattoria, where the decor is no frills, the menu sticks to the classics (carbonara, cacio e pepe, amatriciana, etc.), and the atmosphere is convivial.

Pianostrada is my favorite restaurant for creative bistro cuisine. The decor is shabby-chic, with mismatched vintage furniture, and the self-taught chef Paola Colucci is known for pillowy focaccia and classics with a twist.

Pizzeria L’Elementare is my go-to for Roman-style pizza with a thin crust and classic or creative toppings.

Gelateria del Teatro near Piazza Navona makes all-natural gelato and sorbetto with fresh ingredients, like pistachios from Sicily and strawberries from Terracina.

Chorus Caffè is a hidden gem tucked away near the Vatican, where the cocktails are among the best in the city and if you go for aperitivo, they come with some delicious bites from the kitchen.
